I am deeply committed to the non-profit Steve’s Club National Program. Witnessing the mission of Steve’s Club and the successes of its young athletes has changed my life. It has taught me that true differences aren’t just made by corporate donations or large-scale organizations like the Red Cross or The Government.
Difference-makers start at street-level. Change starts with people who decide I’m going to make a difference for ONE kid, ONE community, ONE void…it starts with ONE PERSON. Not a Politician. Not Congress. Not “Somebody. Not “They.”
(We hear it too often. “Somebody should do something.” “They should do something.” Why not “I should do something?”)
The people best equipped to address the unique needs of an individual community are the people in that community. No community in this nation is exactly like another. Waiting for some government agent to “do something” does nothing. Taking some initiative and digging in, addressing what YOU SEE as the need in your community is the most raw, most perfect manifestation of grass-roots activism, innovation, and difference-making I’ve ever seen in my life. It’s unforgettable.
That’s what my friend Steve did in his community. He began working with youth from Camden, New Jersey, where the crime rate per square mile is 651.
The national average is 39.6.
This mission grew into Steve’s Club National Program, a non-profit that provides fitness training, mentorship, and nutritional guidance to at-risk youth. It’s an absolutely amazing program, and I get to see the young athletes working hard and expressing dedication that me (and my silver spoon) have probably never truly known. It’s really amazing. (They’re in the gym working out as I type this from the adjoining offices).
I encourage you to check out this video for a look into the program. (Seriously. Watch this video. Watch it watch it watch it.) Then, see what type of “reward” you can get for your contribution to the driving force behind this program (hint: it’s one VERY yummy reward).
I will be doing a few Steve’s Club features on my blog for the next week (including one on an athlete who survived childhood cancer and now plans to give back to his own community). I want you to know this program better!
The driving force behind our ability to work with and train these kids are sales of Steve’s Original PaleoGoods products, like Paleo Kits, which benefit the non-profit. The originalPaleo Kit was made to give the kids of Steve’s Club a healthy option during the day. I love promoting them, because I love seeing the kids come in, get in a good workout, and grab a PaleoKit using Steve’s Club Store points they earned through their hard work. Paleo Kits are yummy. You should buy them (wink).
