Ever heard that phrase, “s/he’s starting to believe his own hype?”

Welp, while I don’t have that problem (or any hype to speak of), I’ve realized in my recent “stress overhaul” that I have a tendency to take every sideways glance or morsel of negative feedback to heart.

And then, I take it to soul, and mind, and then I rub it all over myself, and then I wash my hair with it, and then I imprint it on my memory Jacob-Renesmee style and carry it around in a bag that’s duct-taped to my mitts like I’m playing a really un-fun game of Edward Forty-hands.

I’m sensitive, OK?

But that’s not cool! It’s not cool to let that stuff in. It’s not helpful.

I’m pretty vocal about my flaws. I suck at cooking. I also suck at cooking. (Did I mention I suck at cooking?) There are others.

Like Michael Scott, I’m not perfect.

I know I’m not the only one that spends too much time stressing about the negative things. So it’s time for all of us to acknowledge our great qualities. OUT LOUD.

I’m good at getting to the heart of problems. I’m a great listener. I’m a talented writer. I’m a great wife and companion.

And now, I want YOU to tell me something that is awesome about YOU. I’m serious. Let’s spend some time today recognizing and SAYING OUT LOUD the awesome qualities we’ve all got in spades. It’s a no-negativity Tuesday.

What are you good at? What’s awesome about YOU? I want to hear (er, read) you say it!

A friend wrote this post recently, and I was deeply moved by it. Not because there’s any cave-baby-making-hanky-panky going on over here, but because I’ve found yoga so incredibly powerful in soothing my mind and calming my heart. It has been an absolute gift in trying to stay afloat through changes and the seemingly never-ending intensifying pattern of LIFE.

Many of my Nutritional Therapy clients come to me for help with fertility, and this is the perfect post for them. Read the full post here, and be sure to pass it along!

My friend Sima says,

“Soften the negative thoughts that might feed you and try to replace them with acceptance.”

This has helped me put so many things into perspective. Softening negative thoughts means being able to gracefully counter them. Identifying those moments when I’m allowing myself to be fed by negativity – therefore allowing myself to become those negative thoughts (because, after all, we are what we eat) is often enough to take their edge away.

The post, to me, is all about grace.

You should buy PaleoKits this week.
With the code cavegirl2013, you can get FREE shipping!
Show some love, and look for the first athlete feature tomorrow! More details at the end.

I am deeply committed to the non-profit Steve’s Club National Program. Witnessing the mission of Steve’s Club and the successes of its young athletes has changed my life. It has taught me that true differences aren’t just made by corporate donations or large-scale organizations like the Red Cross or The Government.

Difference-makers start at street-level. Change starts with people who decide I’m going to make a difference for ONE kid, ONE community, ONE void…it starts with ONE PERSON. Not a Politician. Not Congress. Not “Somebody. Not “They.”

(We hear it too often. “Somebody should do something.” “They should do something.” Why not “I should do something?”)

The people best equipped to address the unique needs of an individual community are the people in that community. No community in this nation is exactly like another. Waiting for some government agent to “do something” does nothing. Taking some initiative and digging in, addressing what YOU SEE as the need in your community is the most raw, most perfect manifestation of grass-roots activism, innovation, and difference-making I’ve ever seen in my life. It’s unforgettable.

That’s what my friend Steve did in his community. He began working with youth from Camden, New Jersey, where the crime rate per square mile is 651.

The national average is 39.6.

This mission grew into Steve’s Club National Program, a non-profit that provides fitness training, mentorship, and nutritional guidance to at-risk youth. It’s an absolutely amazing program, and I get to see the young athletes working hard and expressing dedication that me (and my silver spoon) have probably never truly known. It’s really amazing. (They’re in the gym working out as I type this from the adjoining offices).

I encourage you to check out this video for a look into the program. (Seriously. Watch this video. Watch it watch it watch it.) Then, see what type of “reward” you can get for your contribution to the driving force behind this program (hint: it’s one VERY yummy reward).

I will be doing a few Steve’s Club features on my blog for the next week (including one on an athlete who survived childhood cancer and now plans to give back to his own community). I want you to know this program better!

The driving force behind our ability to work with and train these kids are sales of Steve’s Original PaleoGoods products, like Paleo Kits, which benefit the non-profit. The originalPaleo Kit was made to give the kids of Steve’s Club a healthy option during the day. I love promoting them, because I love seeing the kids come in, get in a good workout, and grab a PaleoKit using Steve’s Club Store points they earned through their hard work. Paleo Kits are yummy. You should buy them (wink).

…And you should buy them this week. With the code cavegirl2013, you can get FREE shipping! Show some love, and look for an athlete feature on Thursday!

If you order, feel free to leave a comment and let me know so I can thank you personally.

This may affect how you think of me…

…but it’s not the prospect of a pastured-beef-liver-filled-grass-fed-meatball that gets me out of bed in the morning.

In fact, I find it kind of hard to get out of bed in the morning, no matter how much weird food awaits.

Strange confession, I know. But the truth is, despite all the liver in my freezer and pastured eggs in my fridge; despite my more-than-adequate vitamin D levels and my love of lard, I’ve been in a Primal Hole lately. I’ve been stuck in my own little world of ERMAGERD LETS TALK ABOUT FOOD ALL THE TIME FOREVER, which usually makes me happy, but lately I’ve been…meh.

I’ve been pretty lost as to why. My food is perf. The nutrients are flowing. My sat-fat is sat-fatting all over this mug. (Literally. This mug is full of saturated fat.)

Americano whipped with butter & coconut oil. Dash of cinnamon on top.

(PS: I do like big mutts. One slobbery, sweet one in particular.)

I believed I had all the ingredients to bake up some Paleo-fied happiness, but I just haven’t been feeling like a happy-peppy-person.

The curtains opened when Mark Sisson’s new book, The Primal Connection, arrived at my door.

This book couldn’t have hit me harder if the UPS guy’d thrown it at my head. From the moment I opened it, in fact, I was smacking myself in the head. There are so many gems in this book – I can hardly stand it. It’s everything I needed to understand what may be amiss for me – namely, me.

Ya know how John Lennon was the Walrus? Well…I am the disconnect.

It’d be harsh to say “I’m doing it wrong,” but the truth is – the disconnect is ME.

What Mark did with this book was remind me, powerfully and primally yet with the backing of solid science, that it’s not just about food. It’s about connecting with what makes us beings on the Earth.

That’s shutting off “technology” and realizing that more screen time doesn’t mean more productivity.

That’s stopping the ridiculous quest for somebody else’s brand of perfection.

That’s realizing that work MUST wait.

That’s cultivating a TRIBE; being part of a community, and allowing interaction for the sake of interaction (not work!) to invigorate me.

That’s touching, feeling, moving, being in nature. (Preferably with bare feet, and with the Gokhale method in mind)

That’s realizing that it doesn’t matter if potatoes are Paleo if my feet haven’t touched the bare-ass ground all day.

There’s science behind all of this. Real science. And common sense. Mark covers all of it. Real health starts with how we live, not just what we eat.

Of course, food is wrapped up in the “how we live” equation, but health requires more than just clean food – and that can’t be ignored. I see it more clearly now than ever in my nutritional therapy practice, where people eating so-called perfect diets are seeing issues that Mark’s philosophy would, I suspect, address completely.

Here’s something that’s really, really sad: I used to go outside every day. The Paleo Pooch and I covered at least 4 miles rain, wind, sleet, hell or high water. We once walked our route in 18″ of snow. Not kidding.

But now there are days when I don’t go outside at all. Weekdays are workdays, and I’ll go outside on the journey from car to office and back. Weekends are catch-up days, and there are times when I realize, 36 hours later, that I have neither been outside nor noticed the weather or the sun. Sure, I go to yoga and CrossFit, but those are inside activities too. I know I’m not the only one who’s had these pitfalls of modern life slip by unnoticed.

I’ve been blessed with amazing work and an amazing community, but I’ve been talking to them through a computer instead of in-person. I’ve been Skyping-in my friendships.

Me and D-sizzle, Skyping it in.

The first thing I touch when I wake up in the morning isn’t the handsome Cave-husband to whom I’m beyond blessed to be married. It’s my iPhone (I know, I know – the cell phone shouldn’t be my alarm clock) as I check, with one bleary eye open, the e-mails that came in during the night.

The dog has a doggie-door so he can hang in the backyard while I type-type-type and text-text-text.

I’ve buried myself the last 2 years trying to do everythingeverythingallthetime, never shutting off the computer or my phone. And, unfortunately, during that time, nobody has gotten my best. And I’ve definitely lost myself a little.

I’m going to change a few things, and if The Primal Connection is right, it’s going to change my health and my mind-set. Unfortunately, I can’t always bring my camera-phone along for the ride, but I’ll sure write about it…when I plug back in.

In the interest of total technological hypocrisy, I’ve got AWESOME news! Mark Sisson is coming on the Balanced Bites Podcast very soon! Perhaps we’ll record barefoot from around a campfire…

I’ve gotten some questions (read: heated reactions) about a few of the e-books included in the Toadally Primal Wellness Bundle.

Some of these books are decidedly un-Paleorthodox. As in – they run against the common “Paleo” grain (lulz). I won’t name names – if ya know, ya know – but here’s the deal: if we aren’t exposed to alternative points of view, we stagnate.

Without the thoughtful input of people who slightly, moderately, or even completely disagree with our personal set of guidelines, we lose our edge. We get tunnel-vision. We forget what brought us here in the first place: questioning everything.

Yes, flour-tossing Veg*s and the staunch SAD-defenders have been wrung out, and with good reason: they’ve had their chance, and their beliefs don’t hold up to scrutiny (historic or scientific). But there’s a world of interesting ideas within this real-food community that are worth kicking around – if only to keep us on our toes! Nobody’s making you accept anything as truth. But what’s the harm in considering a new – even controversial – idea?

I’ll stop there – but here’s my bottom line: I respect anyone who’s out there working to help, doing their due diligence and taking the time to talk about their beliefs (even the FTV’s and SADD’s). I may or may not incorporate certain recommendations, because reading an e-book doesn’t mean I’m required to do anything. The final judgment of a recommendation is how it holds up to my own intuition. And until you do something real bad – like delete The Bachelorette: Ashley and JP’s Wedding from my DVR without permission – you get my “Respek.” **

Boo-yah-kah-shaah! #AshleyAndJP4Ever

** if there’d been a clip from Da Ali G show that would’ve maintained my PG/PG13 blog rating, I would’ve linked it.

I say this in ALL CAPS because it’s JUST THAT IMPORTANT.

This post is not a response to the sorrow of the last few weeks or the conflict of the last few years. It’s not meant to be a counter to the events of the last few decades or anything in this world we find difficult to accept or process. It’s just about LOVE.

I want you all to know how much I love you. Whether you’re surrounded by family or flying solo; whether you feel alone or you’re filled with the warmth of the season; you are loved.

Whether we know each other or not, I love you because we’re in this life together. Seriously. I love you.

Thank you for being part of my journey, and for all that you are – every day of the year.

Love, Me

Here’s what I’m talking about today: myself (surpriiise!), the Weston A. Price Foundation Conference, and a few other things that have happened lately. Like, I dunno, HOLY SARDINES I WROTE A BOOK.

I’m generally a woman of many words and few pictures. That might have something to do with the fact that I’m a crappy photographer but GREAT at running my mouth.

I’m also a pretty bad cook…which all just makes me wonder howwww did I become a food(ish-type) blogger? (Ha! Joke’s on you!)

On a related note, I am feeling pretty dang blessed these days. I realized that I’ve made up for my own shortcomings by forcing very awesome people – who are both great at pictures and great at cooking – to be my friends. In the last month of nonstop travel (NJ to PA to KS to AZ to CA to CO to KS), I’ve been able to spend time with The Food Lovers (Hayley and Bill), Diane “D-Sizzle” Sanfilippo (my Balanced Bites Podcast PIC), Michelle (and Henry, and O-squared) of Nom Nom Paleo, and Juli of PaleOMG, among others. (My time with Juli was in Colorado, where I delivered a nutrition chat at the Air Force Academy. Yep, they let me do that. On purpose. More on that in the next post.)

Here are some things I think about those people:

Hayley and Bill are the most attractive couple on the planet.

Diane has the best bangs of any person on the planet. (Hold on. I’ll show you in a sec.)

The Nom Noms are the most kick-ass family on the planet.

JuliOMG is the winner of every prize on the planet. (I’m serious. Coolest lunch date, most hilarious blogger, and best obscure 80′s movie reference rememberer.) And yes, I said “JuliOMG” on purpose.

These aren’t the only people I reaffirmed my <del>creepy obsession with</del> love for over the last few weeks. I was so excited to have dinner with three tables-full (tablefulls?) of Real Food trailblazers at the WAP Conference. My third year attending this shindig and it was the most Paleo-heavy yet. Here is a photo mash-up from Laura. Diane’s bangs are in there too. I’m the one in the pink shirt pretending to NOT be an idiot. Except for the top-left corner. That one I’m actually being myself.

And instead of making conversation with these extraordinary humans, I stared with my mouth agape (agape, I tell you!) and tested the panoramic setting on my iPhone 4.

Here are a few of the people I agape-d at: Laura of Ancestralize Me. Stefani Ruper of Paleo for Women. Chris Masterjohn, PhD (aka Dr. J or Jam MasterJ). Chris Kresser. Diane. Steve of SCDLifestyle. Hayley. Bill. Ben. Sophia. The Lazy Caveman. It’s midnight (5 hours past bedtime) so I’m going to quit there. Holla and I’ll add you.

And then, Siri and I got in a fight. I miss my flip phone.

Next: I want everyone to know that I swept the “Most Awkward” prize category (sorry, Juli) when I stared at Nom Nom for five minutes and then said “I liiike you.” If you’ve seen A Christmas Story, think of the kid Ralphie has to stand in line with to see Santa. Not Randy, but the kid with the gizmo hat on who says “I liiike Santa Claus.” That was how it came out.

Can’t see the video? Try here.

Yet Michelle (Nom Nom:Michelle::Superman:Clark Kent) treated me as if I was a totally normal person. She is one of my heroes. And this weekend was full of those. I learned, ate, and awkward-ed my face off alongside some people I’m grateful to know. I ate fish eggs with my friends. All things I like doing.

The Weston A. Price conference is phenomenal. If you’ve listened to the Balanced Bites Podcast or been around me for awhile, you know I dig their dirt. I dig traditional foods, organ meats, cod liver oil and PhDs. And learning from said PhDs. And having one of said PhDs pose with the Polyface pig picture I won at the silent auction.

How cool is that? I wanna eat them. (The pigs, not the PhDs.)

The one thing I didn’t get the chance to do during the conference was work on the “soundbite” for my book, Modern Cave Girl. I still can’t believe I’m really going to be published. (“My name in PRINT! …things are going to start happening to me NOW.“)* Here’s my elevator pitch so far:

“This book proves that every word of Skinny Bitch was off-the-farm, out-of-your-gourd bonkers. Don’t read that book. It will make you dumber. Read this book. It will make you eat pork belly.”

Thoughts? Too subtle?

* * *

*first one to name that quote, gets an advance copy of my book when it comes out!

Thank you so much – it means the world. Winner has been chosen (Amy R.) and giveaway is now closed!

I’m sitting in my home office with the window slightly open, and the most delightfully chilly fall breeze is ushering that perfect autumn smell of burning leaves (yes, I LOVE that smell) into the room. I’ve got fresh apples from Terhune Orchards ready to sauté with butter and cinnamon for a treat tonight. I haven’t taken my Mountain Hardware “Monkey” fleece off for days.

(I haven’t washed my hair for days either, but that’s not just ’cause I’m a lazy married gave girl – it’s ’cause I’m No Poo!)

Fall is my absolute favorite season. The beautiful change of seasons, the crisp, cool air, and smooching duck-shaped ornamental gourds makes me happier than a Paul Rudd movie marathon.

But the best thing about fall is most definitely the fall noms from Steve’s Original PaleoGoods. I love Steve’s Original, not only because their products are super-clean, portable, and ridiculously delicious, but because sales support a cause I’m involved with – Steve’s Club National Program. Steve’s Club provides fitness training, mentorship and nutritional guidance (my role) to at-risk youth.

The program began in Camden, NJ – ranked as one of the FBI’s most dangerous cities in the nation many years runnning. These youth live in very difficult environments, and Steve’s Club gives them a place to succeed.

Watch this video from our annual fundraiser to see what Steve’s Club is all about. It’s truly amazing.

In support of Steve’s Club, I’m hosting a fall giveaway of some of my favorite offerings from Steve’s PaleoGoods!

This post is a cross-over from my Nutritional Therapy practice. As you can see from my Bill-and-Ted-esque verbiage, I have few concerns about maintaining a regal air of professionalism (that went out the window with my Balanced Bites Podcast shenanigans).

It’s important to note that I use the phrase “most triumphant” as Bill uses it in the following video:

I mean it as highly triumphant, or fully triumphant. I mean that these habits, for all intents and purposes – and no, it’s not intensive purposes – will guarantee amazing progress. These habits are to success what Eddie Van Halen is to Wyld Stallions’ triumphant-ness. (Triumphance?)

I’m speaking from my experiences with helping people – and helping myself – choose better foods, make healing lifestyle choices, and become healthier physically and mentally. I learned very quickly that the journey is not only about habits pertaining to food.

And by habits, I mean things that are done repetitively until they become second nature. (Listen to me, Rufus – I know what I’m talking about.)

Habit #1: Looking beyond food.

As we learn more about food, we also learn that there is far more to the equation of health-and-wellness than what we put in the cake-hole. While food is a critical input, healing really starts when we address the life landscape. As we begin (or continue) to seek nourishing, healing foods, we’ve got to simultaneously look at improving stress levels (if you’re a hyperactive stress case, even the best food won’t solve your woes – trust me, I know), re-evaluating toxic relationships, reducing the toxin load from the personal environment, getting better sleep, and maybe – just maybe – getting a pet whose sweet presence and goofy ears could break even the worst day’s tension.

Habit #2: Doing the hokey stuff.

Nourishing, healing moments are, quite literally, healing to the body as well as the mind.

This is a continuation of habit number one, but involves spending time – sometimes, as much time as we might spend cooking, food blogging, or exercising – doing things like conscious meditation, deep breathing, and relaxing. This may mean finding a place for relaxation on a daily basis; seeking peace and calm; keeping a gratitude notebook; or making a point to hug your spouse, kids, or even yourself every day (trust me – to start the day with a smile, just give yourself a hug).

Important note: too often the suggestion to relax and meditate is taken as “buy a yoga mat,” or even ”join a hot Vinyasa flow class that meets for 90 minutes five days a week.” While I absolutely adore a good hot Vinyasa flow class, and while it can certainly help calm and center a person mentally, this is not the point I want to make. Often, spending money on something that represents relaxation comes to serve as a substitute for actually relaxing. By “hokey stuff,” I mean stuff we don’t have to pay for; stuff for which we don’t need special equipment or a bank account deeper than the genius of Real Food Ryan Gosling.

Habit #3: Being patient and persistent.

None of us got to a state of ill health or unhappiness overnight; and it takes time to achieve health goals. Sometimes it takes time, re-evaluation, further learning, renewing of commitment, and more time. Giving up or giving in to frustration is Diet behavior. Patience and persistence is lifestyle behavior.

This also means not just “following directions” – ie, creating obsessions rather than habits, or blindly following a “program” without understanding why or how it works. It means learning who we are, what food does in our bodies, what stress does to our health, and how modern diet and lifestyle myths have completely screwed us over (That’s what my book is about). One major modern myth: that “weight loss” by any means necessary will make us as healthy as bringing the body into balance, patiently and persistently, using real, nourishing foods and dedicated lifestyle change (see #1 and 2).

Habit #4: <del>Watching Harrison Ford movies</del> Listening to Yoda.

If this post wasn’t fully saturated with nerdy movie references, it surely is now. Most of us know the famous Yoda line “Do, or do not. There is no try.” The fact is, when a person tells me “I’ll try,” I can almost always predict they’ll also, at some point, tell me “I fell off the wagon;” “It’s too hard” or “I tripped and fell into a plate of Tasty Kakes.” It’s almost as if they’re pre-acknowledging the possibility for failure – by whatever measure they gauge it.

Whether you think “failing” means a bite of a coconut macaroon, a night of pizza and beer, or a slip-up from a list of arbitrary “rules” is irrelevant – it’s the mind-set with which you dedicate yourself to a lifestyle change that truly matters.

Although we all, of course, need to have a try-hard attitude; and while we all need to commit to doing our best, moment-by-moment, while refusing to judge ourselves for the so-called slip-ups, we also must realize that our words are incredibly important determinants of the way we go about tackling a lifestyle change. The words “I’ll try” often belie an unsure, waffling mind-set that exists only to cushion failure with half-commitments. When you make a choice, make it fully. Make that moment a decisive one. Say you’ll do it and you will.

And last, but not least, remember…Be excellent to each other. And tell me YOUR ideas.

I’m absolutely in love with fall. Everything about it is perfection to me – football season, fleece weather, crisp air, apple picking, ornamental gourds, and The Great Pumpkin.

“The fury of a woman scorned…nothing compared to the fury of a woman who has been cheated out of tricks or treats.”

But fall also means the beginning of drier air (more dry air? Air dry?) and the ramping up of my diligent body care routine. I love being educated on new ways to heal, fortify, and protect my skin without a litany of junky ingredients and unnecessary chemicals (more about this on my body care page), and I know there’s an amazing world of nourishing oils out there that help do the job.

I’m fortunate to know Trina of Primal Life Organics, who is the Skin Care equivalent of the Apple Genius Bar; a veritable Vivaldi of skin-nourishing compositions. Yes, Trina is a prodigy when it comes to feeding the skin. Her goodies are liquid gold. They’re an investment in my epidermal future. Like my cavehusband the season 2 VHS box-set of the Vampire Diaries, Trina’s products make my life complete.

Better yet, Trina gives back. Her new line, Primal Seasons, will offer a unique product that benefits a NEW charitable Foundation every season! This season, a portion of proceeds support the Navy Seal Foundation.

Fallen, the Primal Life Organics Fall 2012 Primal Seasons offering, is stacked with Trina’s hand-picked Skin Food (read more here). As the skin’s needs change with the seasons, so do the nourishing, skin-loving, reparative oils Trina uses.

Sales of Fallen benefit the Navy Seal Foundation, which supports both military personnel and their families. As a military wife, I owe a debt of gratitude to everyone who shows this kind of support to our troops and their loved ones. This type of generosity truly renders me speechless. THANK YOU, Trina.
